TRICARE is the health insurance program for active duty service members, veterans, National Guard and Reserve members, retirees, and their families. It is administered by the Defense Health Agency and covers a wide range of medical and behavioral health services.
TRICARE operates several different plans, including:
Each plan has its own cost-sharing structure, but all TRICARE plans are required by law to include mental health and substance use disorder benefits.
Yes. TRICARE covers a broad range of mental health services, including outpatient therapy, inpatient psychiatric care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, and medication management.
Mental health benefits under TRICARE are considered essential health benefits. Coverage applies to the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, and more.
As an in-network TRICARE provider, Time Wellness Tennessee works directly with TRICARE to simplify the billing process. You pay less out of pocket, and you don’t have to navigate the paperwork alone. Our admissions team handles insurance verification so you can focus on getting better.
Time Wellness Tennessee offers multiple levels of care that are covered under TRICARE.Â
Depending on your plan and clinical needs, coverage may apply to:
TRICARE is designed to serve a diverse military community, from active duty soldiers to retired veterans to teenage dependents. Coverage rules can vary significantly based on your specific plan, your status, and whether you’re seeing an in-network or out-of-network provider.
A few things to know:
If you’re unsure which plan you have or what your benefits include, our admissions team can help you verify coverage before treatment begins.
Military service is demanding. Deployments, combat exposure, separation from family, and the transition back to civilian life can all take a significant toll on mental health.
The numbers reflect this. PTSD affects a significant portion of combat veterans. Depression and anxiety are common among both active duty members and veterans. Suicide rates among veterans remain a serious public health concern.
Despite this, many service members and their families hesitate to seek help. Concerns about stigma, career impact, or appearing weak can create barriers that keep people suffering in silence. At Time Wellness Tennessee, we understand this. We work with military clients and their families with deep respect for their service and their privacy.Â
TRICARE mental health benefits are defined under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which requires that mental health coverage be comparable to medical and surgical coverage.Â
In practical terms, this means:
Under most TRICARE plans, you will pay a copay or cost-share per visit. The exact amount depends on your plan, your status, and whether your provider is in-network. Because Time Wellness Tennessee is an in-network TRICARE provider, our clients typically pay significantly less than they would with an out-of-network facility.
It depends on your plan.
TRICARE Prime generally requires a referral from your Primary Care Manager (PCM) before seeing a mental health specialist. In some cases, you can self-refer for a limited number of outpatient mental health visits per year without a referral.
TRICARE Select typically does not require a referral, but prior authorization may be required for certain services, including inpatient care, PHP, and IOP.
For higher levels of care, such as residential treatment, PHP, or IOP, prior authorization is usually required regardless of your plan. Our admissions team will help coordinate this process so there are no delays in starting treatment. When in doubt, call us first. We will find out exactly what your plan requires and handle the authorization process on your behalf.
Choosing an in-network provider like Time Wellness Tennessee makes a real financial difference.
Depending on your plan, TRICARE may reimburse a percentage of the allowable charge, but you could still face a significant balance. Some out-of-network providers are not covered at all under certain TRICARE plans.
Choosing an in-network provider is the simplest and most cost-effective option. Time Wellness Tennessee accepts TRICARE and works directly with the program so you don’t have to.
