What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

Mental health treatment offers multiple levels of care. Among them is PHP, which is the highest level of outpatient treatment available.

PHP requires a person to attend therapy during daylong sessions usually over five days per week. This level of care offers many of the advantages of a residential program without requiring the person to move out of their homes.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Chattanooga, Tennessee, includes exposure to multiple types of therapies.

This gives the advantage of tackling the symptoms and triggers of poor mental health by applying lessons learned while attending these different therapies. PHP also provides medication management and prescription medications to help complement the overall mental health treatment approach.

How Do I Know Someone Needs a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Chattanooga, Tennessee?

Deciding on which level of care a person with a mental illness needs can feel tricky. An assessment by a therapist or treatment center admissions counselor can help determine the exact needs of a person. The assessment will involve asking questions about the person’s symptoms, the length and severity of their illness, and any previous attempts at treatment.

PHP works well for people who meet these qualifications:

  • People whose mental health disorders have made it somewhat to severely difficult to complete daily tasks, personal obligations, or work.
  • Individuals who are not at risk for self-harm and are medically stable but still need mental health treatment.
  • Those who have a support system at home with stable housing.
  • Clients who are ready to commit to a full-time schedule of therapy to treat symptoms of mental health disorders.

Partial Hospitalization Program vs Residential Treatment

The key difference between a partial hospitalization program and residential treatment lies in where the person lives. With PHP, they travel to a facility for their appointments and then return home when they are done. Residential treatment takes place in a live-in facility where the person temporarily resides. They receive 24/7 care from mental health clinicians.
