What is a Mental Disorder?

Mental disorders are also known as mental health disorders and can happen to anyone. They negatively impact a person’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, often resulting in unmanageable moods. Some mental disorders are curable, while others are lifelong but can be managed when a person seeks professional help.

Poor mental health causes problems in the individual’s personal life, career, and education. When someone has a mental illness, it proves vital to seek treatment from a licensed program to help them manage or overcome their mental disorder.

What Types of Mental Disorders Are There?

Some mental disorders are more commonly known and discussed than others. We can help you get an accurate diagnosis during a psychiatric evaluation.

The types of mental disorders include:

Mood
Disorders

Mood disorders are characterized by having unstable moods that make it difficult for a person to maintain long-term relationships and do well on the job or at school. The individual often gets stuck in one mood, including depression or mania, and stays in it for hours or days at a time. While mood disorders, like bipolar disorder, cannot be cured, they can be managed with professional help.

Trauma
Disorders

The most common type of trauma-related disorder are post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and acute stress disorder. Trauma disorders result after a person experiences one or more traumatic events, such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, military-related events, natural disasters, school or workplace shootings, and more.

Anxiety
Disorders

When anxiety becomes uncontrollable and impacts a person’s relationships, career, and education, it is an anxiety disorder. Types of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and phobias. Anxiety disorders are the most commonly occurring type of mental health disorders worldwide.

Personality
Disorders

Personality disorders are characterized by difficulty maintaining healthy relationships because of how the person thinks, feels, and behaves. The individual has uncontrolled mood swings and may have another mental health disorder at the same time. In addition, there are several types of personality disorders classified into Clusters A, B, and C.

Borderline Personality
Disorder (BPD)

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a Cluster B personality disorder where the person struggles with emotional regulation, impulse control, black-and-white thinking, and difficulty maintaining healthy relationships. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is the primary treatment method of this disorder, along with medications and holistic approaches.

Schizophrenia Spectrum
Disorders

These disorders, including thought disorders, are characterized by difficulty thinking, expressing thoughts, and communicating, as well as limited personal or social relationships. The individual may also experience hallucinations or delusions. While schizophrenia spectrum disorders are not curable, they can be managed with professional treatment.

Complicated
Grief

Grief is a natural emotional process that occurs following a significant loss—such as the death of a loved one or a breakup of a romantic relationship. However, when grief lingers for the long term and never seems to improve, you might develop complicated grief with additional mental health symptoms such as depression or anxiety.

Behavioral
Disorders

Behavioral disorders can negatively impact your quality of life and overall well-being. At Time Wellness Centers in Tennessee, we will help you develop healthy coping skills to replace unhealthy behavioral patterns. Treatment options include holistic therapy, CBT, DBT, and medication management.

Sleep
Disorders

Sleep disorders often co-occur with other mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Addressing a co-occurring sleep disorder or sleep issues as a symptom of another disorder can help you feel more energized, focused, resilient, and more balanced overall.

Eating
Disorders

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating, and other types of disordered eating habits. Oftentimes, eating disorders are rooted in underlying mental health distress. Our treatment program helps people heal from eating disorders and develop healthy coping mechanisms for underlying causes.

Suicidal
Ideation

Suicidal ideation is a sign that your mental health is significantly impaired. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts that don’t seem to go away, you need to get help immediately. Suicidal ideation could be a symptom of a mental health disorder, like depression, PTSD, or OCD.

Dual
Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis — also called co-occurring disorders — is the simultaneous presence of a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder in the same person at the same time.

Burnout
Treatment

Burnout is more than just stress. This can lead to a decline in your mental and physical well-being. Our burnout treatment program will help you overcome burnout and any co-occurring disorders or underlying issues contributing to it.

How Common are Mental Disorders?

The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that in 2021, almost 23% of adults in the U.S. experienced a mental illness. Unfortunately, only about 47%, or less than half, went for treatment for their mental disorders in the same year. The most common disorder is anxiety, which impacts about one out of five people.

Breaking down the prevalence of adults in the U.S. who experience a mental illness is as follows:

  • Non-Hispanic Asian: 16.4%
  • Non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander: 18.1%
  • Non-Hispanic Black or African American: 21.4%
  • Hispanic or Latino: 20.7%
  • Non-Hispanic White: 23.9%
  • Non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native: 26.6%
  • Non-Hispanic mixed/multiracial: 34.9%
  • Lesbian, Gay, or Bisexual 50.2%

In the U.S., approximately 8.4 million people provide care for an adult who struggles with emotional or mental health issues.

How Are Mental Disorders Treated?

When it comes to treating mental disorders, the most effective help falls under four different categories. A combination of two or more of these can result in making tremendous progress in healing a person’s symptoms and teaching them to manage their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.

  • Psychiatry: A psychiatrist, who is a medical doctor who trains in the field of psychiatry, provides diagnoses, recommends prescription medications, and oversees their use. They typically do not provide talk therapy sessions.
  • Medication: Prescription medications can help improve a person’s emotional state of mind and minimize their symptoms of poor mental health.
  • Psychotherapy: This term is often used interchangeably with “talk therapy”, but it includes more conversational focuses, such as childhood experiences and other factors that influence a person’s mental health.
  • Talk Therapy: This type of therapy often centers on addressing current life struggles and developing healthy coping mechanisms.
