What is a Thought Disorder?

Thought disorders are classified as a mental health disorder that causes a person to have difficulty controlling and understanding their thoughts. Their cognitive abilities are impacted, making it cumbersome to enjoy healthy relationships with others.

Thought disorders cause a person to have difficulty processing and expressing their thoughts. This can create problems doing well at work and in school. While thought disorders cannot be cured, they can be managed by attending a licensed treatment program for mental illnesses.

Types of Thought Disorders

A person can have one of many types of thought disorders. Getting an assessment from a mental health professional will help determine which kind they have, and they can develop a treatment plan from there.

The types of thought disorders include the following:

  • Schizophrenia: An illness characterized by thought processes and actions that are often detached from reality and may include hallucinations.
  • Schizophreniform Disorder: Similar to schizophrenia, except that symptoms only last a short period of time—about 1 to 6 months.
  • Schizoaffective Disorder: This type combines the symptoms of schizophrenia and a mood disorder.
  • Brief Psychotic Disorder: A brief period of psychosis (less than one month) can be distressing, however, it might not recur. Treatment can help prevent relapses of psychotic symptoms.
  • Alogia: This causes a person to have difficulty talking with people. They use brief answers and often do not finish their thoughts.
  • Blocking: This type causes a person to stop speaking before they finish their thoughts. When they begin to talk again, they often speak about a different topic.
  • Circumstantial Thinking: Characterized by disorganized thinking and a focus on details not necessary to the conversation.
  • Clanging: The individual will speak in rhyming words, sounds, or puns when having a conversation.
  • Echolalia: This causes a person to repeat back what others have said to them.
  • Neologism: Characterized by making up non-existent words that confuse the other person talking.
  • Tangentiality: The individual jumps from topic to topic without making a point about the topic of conversation.
  • Word Salad: This causes a person to use random words and phrases during their conversations that don’t make sense.
