What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Mental Health?

Intensive outpatient programs are a level of care provided for people who need daily and focused care for their mental health.

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) in Chattanooga, Tennessee, provides mental health support and services for people who need more than just a couple of therapy sessions per week but do not qualify for residential treatment.

Someone who enters our program attends IOP for a minimum of nine hours per week, usually spread across three days. The person travels to a facility for their appointments and then returns to their home or a supportive housing environment after. Once they complete IOP, they can continue therapy by attending one or two sessions a week as needed.

How Do I Know I Need an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Tennessee?

It can feel difficult to know which level of care is right for a person who needs mental health treatment.

A good candidate for IOP will meet the following qualifications:

  • Does not need a higher level of care, such as a Partial Hospitalization Program or Residential, or has recently completed it
  • Has a supportive home environment
  • Comfortable in individual and group therapy environments
  • Motivated to participate in therapy sessions and do follow-up work
  • Able to attend at least nine hours of therapy per week
  • Wants a program that provides free time over the week to devote to home and job responsibilities

    Inpatient vs Outpatient Treatment

Time Wellness offers both inpatient and outpatient levels of care to meet the needs of the majority of people with mental health disorders.

The main difference in the programs is that inpatient care requires a person to move into a facility and live there temporarily while receiving round-the-clock care. Outpatient care takes place at a facility but the person does not live in it. Instead, they travel there for appointments and then return home.
