What is a Psychological Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation in Tennessee is performed by a mental health expert, such as a therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist. The results will be discussed with the person, and the diagnosis can be used to enter a treatment program or other type of mental healthcare. Having a diagnosis also proves beneficial when using insurance to cover the costs of treatment.
Signs That a Psychological Evaluation is Necessary
Because there are so many mental health disorders, they don’t all have the same symptoms. However, many symptoms are common to several mental illnesses, and when they surface, it may mean a person needs to obtain a psychological evaluation.
Common symptoms of a mental health disorder include:
- Crying for known or unknown reasons
- Easily startled
- Depression
- Mood swings from depression to mania
- Abusing drugs or alcohol to minimize symptoms
- Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
- Changes in weight or appetite
- Unexplained medical symptoms, like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and body aches
- Isolating
- Loss of interest in hobbies and a social life
- Angry outbursts
- Risky behavior
- Difficulty thinking, making decisions, and concentrating
More Than 1 in 5 US Adults Live With a Mental Health Disorder
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), “It is estimated that more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness (59.3 million in 2022; 23.1% of the U.S. adult population).” These disorders vary in terms of severity and symptoms, so it is best to seek a psychiatric evaluation to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
How Our Psychiatric Evaluations Work at Time Wellness TennesseeÂ
We perform psychiatric evaluations and reach a diagnosis within the first 48 hours after the individual is admitted into our treatment program. We share the results with the person so they understand their mental health and can set treatment goals.Â
Â
What to Expect During a Psychiatric Evaluation
Part of what makes our Time Wellness program work so well is that we include a psychiatric evaluation, which enables us to understand exactly what condition a person has, allowing us to customize a treatment plan accordingly.Â
The evaluation can include filling out forms, speaking with the clinician, and taking standardized tests. The person will be asked about their previous mental health and medical history, any past diagnoses, and any current symptoms they experience. The goal is for the clinician to gather all pertinent information to get a full picture of a person’s mental health.Â
How Will a Psychiatric Evaluation Give Me a Mental Health Diagnosis?
After a psychiatric evaluation in Tennessee, the person who administered the testing will review all the information they gathered and often refer to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), which allows them to form a diagnosis.Â
What Happens After a Psychiatric Evaluation?
The diagnosis will be shared with the individual and can also be shown to therapists, treatment programs, and their insurance company. From there, a treatment plan can be designed to help them find the right treatment program.
Our Mental Health Treatment Programs
Once one of our mental health experts performs a psychiatric evaluation in Tennessee, we determine which level of care they should attend to get the best results possible. Residential inpatient programs require a person to live in a facility for a short-term stay, while outpatient programs allow them to live at home or in supportive housing and travel to us for their appointments.
- Residential Inpatient: We provide a comfortable, homelike environment in which people feel safe living and receiving round-the-clock care. This level of care works well for people who have severe symptoms of mental health disorders and need 24/7 care.
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Therapy sessions are held for several hours per day on Monday through Friday.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Therapy sessions take place for a few hours each day on three to five days each week.
- Outpatient Program (OP): Therapy sessions are held once or twice per week.
- Supportive Mental Health Housing: We partner with local supportive housing programs that provide a safe space for people to live with other people in treatment for mental illnesses.Â
