What Is Residential Mental Health Treatment?
Residential mental health treatment is the highest level of care and usually takes place in a home-like facility. It provides clinical care as well as a continuum of care. Clients live at the treatment center full-time, where they receive meals and other services while focusing exclusively on healing. This approach offers the necessary tools to cope better with mental health disorders.
Typically, residential treatment involves round-the-clock support as well as various forms of psychotherapy. A residential treatment stay usually lasts from a few weeks to several months.

How Is Mental Health Treated in Tennessee?
Our inpatient programs include the following types of therapies for mental health disorders:
- Medication Management: Psychiatric medications, combined with psychotherapy, are the most common treatments for mental health disorders. These medications help to alleviate symptoms like mood dysregulation, anxiety, psychosis, and depression.
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is among the most common types of psychotherapies due to its proven track record of treating a wide range of symptoms and diagnoses.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, DBT can help those with other disorders by focusing on developing four crucial skills: (1) mindfulness, (2) emotion regulation, (3) distress tolerance, and (4) interpersonal effectiveness.
- EMDR Therapy: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) helps you process underlying trauma. EMDR therapy includes using bilateral stimulation to calm your body and mind while recalling traumatic events.
- Spravato Treatment: Spravato is the brand name for esketamine, which can alleviate symptoms of treatment-resistant depression (TRD). If traditional depression treatments don’t work for you, Spravato treatment might be able to help.
- Holistic Therapy: Holistic therapies, such as yoga, mindfulness, nutritional counseling, and meditation, can provide new avenues for treating mental health disorders. These therapies complement traditional therapy to give you more options for a robust treatment plan.
- Life Skills: Oftentimes, struggling with a mental health disorder causes deficits in functioning in everyday life. Our life skills classes will help you develop skills like healthy eating, maintaining a living space, obtaining a job, and budgeting your money.
- Trauma Therapy: One of the most common causes of mental health disorders is underlying trauma. Our trauma therapy will help you process and heal from traumatic past experiences.
- Family Program: The family unit can be one of the most valuable support systems in a person’s life. However, these relationships are often disrupted by mental health issues. Our family program teaches families how to heal and grow together.
- Equine-Assisted Therapy: Equine therapy can help clients build self-confidence while developing empathy, compassion, and emotional awareness.

What Does A Typical Day Look Like In Residential Care?
A typical day in residential treatment starts with breakfast and a morning meeting.
That way, clients can set their intentions for the day before attending their program.
After that, clients go to a series of individual and group therapy sessions. Depending on the person’s needs, these sessions can vary from one person to the next. Each session lasts about an hour, with a break for lunch.
In the evening, clients eat a nutritious meal and might have additional peer support group meetings. In addition, clients get free time to relax or engage in recreational activities.

Residential Treatment FAQ
A long-term mental health facility provides extended, structured care for individuals living with serious or complex mental health conditions. Unlike short-term crisis stabilization, long-term residential programs offer weeks or months of immersive treatment including therapy, medication management, and life skills support so, clients have the time and space to achieve lasting recovery.
Inpatient mental health treatment typically takes place in a hospital setting and focuses on short-term stabilization during a psychiatric crisis.
Residential mental health treatment, like the program at Time Wellness Tennessee, provides a home-like environment where clients live on-site and engage in comprehensive care over an extended period making it a better fit for individuals who need more than acute stabilization but don’t require hospital-level supervision.
Residential mental health care is designed for individuals whose symptoms significantly interfere with daily functioning and who haven’t found lasting relief through outpatient treatment alone. It’s a strong fit for those managing conditions like major depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or co-occurring substance use — especially when a structured, supportive environment is needed to make meaningful progress.
