What is Borderline Personality Disorder?

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a chronic mental health disorder. This means it cannot be cured, but its symptoms can be managed with proper treatment. It is a type of personality disorder that causes people to have difficulty perceiving their behaviors, thoughts, and actions, which results in having difficulty sustaining healthy, long-term relationships.

People with BPD struggle with a fear of abandonment and act impulsively, even to their own detriment. They develop symptoms of it as early as childhood but are often misdiagnosed as having depression, anxiety, or other mental illnesses.

How Do I Know When to Seek Help?

Too often, a person living under the shadow of borderline personality disorder loses track of how much their suffering overtakes their lives.

In many cases, they don’t know they have a diagnosable mental health disorder. When they feel overwhelmed by their symptoms and like each day is troubling and negative, it’s time to speak to a treatment program for a psychological evaluation and diagnosis to plan for the right care for them.

BPD and Other Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders

Sometimes people who have BPD also have a co-occurring mental health disorder. The borderline personality disorder treatment they receive must include caring for co-occurring disorders. Common co-occurring disorders include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders.

Causes of Borderline Personality Disorder

Why someone develops a borderline personality disorder can be difficult to determine, and may have one main cause or be the result of two or more triggers. Genetics often plays a part because mental health disorders are often passed down through the family tree. People who experience adverse childhood experiences sometimes go on to develop BPD.

Mental illnesses can also occur because of faulty wiring in a person’s brain that causes a disconnection from healthy behavioral, emotional, and thought patterns.

Tennessee Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment Programs

When it comes to quality borderline personality disorder treatment, people have several options for levels of care to choose from. They include:

  • Residential Inpatient: People who have severe symptoms of their BPD often do well living temporarily in our residential program, where they receive 24/7 care to help soothe their symptoms and begin to make progress.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Outpatient programs enable individuals to live at home and travel to our facility for appointments, which are held Monday through Friday for several hours each day.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): A step down from PHP, our IOP programs provide therapy appointments for a few hours each day on three to five days per week.
  • Outpatient Program (OP): Therapy sessions take place once or twice each week.
  • Supportive Mental Health Housing: People in outpatient care who need a safe place to live can take advantage of our partnership with supportive mental health housing programs in the area.
  • Virtual Treatment: Virtual and telehealth options provide access to those who cannot attend our in-person outpatient programs.

How is Borderline Personality Disorder Treated?

The best way to treat people with borderline personality disorder includes three approaches. Psychotherapy, which includes traditional talk and group therapy, is the center of helping people cope with their poor mental health. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is a specialized form of therapy developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan specifically to treat borderline personality disorder.

Additionally, providing holistic therapy options enables individuals to work on themselves through activities that promote healthier mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. Finally, mental health medications have a great deal of success in helping people ease their symptoms of BPD.
