What Is a Nervous Breakdown?

Before we address the question of how long does a nervous breakdown last, we need to answer two other important queries: What, exactly, is a nervous breakdown? And how do you know if you’re having one?

The first thing to know about nervous breakdowns is that you’re unlikely to ever be diagnosed with one. That’s because there’s no entry for “nervous breakdown” in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which is the standard reference book used by clinicians in the U.S.

Nervous breakdown is an informal term that describes a period of overwhelming psychological  distress, with symptoms so severe that they prevent a person from functioning. The experience also often includes a variety of disruptive physical effects.

Signs that you’re having a nervous breakdown can include:

  • Intense anxiety and/or depression
  • Agitation and irritability
  • Difficulty thinking clearly, focusing, or making decisions
  • Delayed physical and mental responsiveness
  • Extreme fatigue and exhaustion
  • Feelings of helplessness or hopelessness
  • Inability to cope with stress or pressure
  • Dysphoria (general sense of dissatisfaction or unease)
  • Anhedonia (difficulty experiencing happiness or joy)

Warning signs that someone else may be on the verge of a nervous breakdown include:

  • Sudden downturn in performance at work or in school
  • Increase in absenteeism or tardiness
  • Acting with uncharacteristic anger, defensiveness, or aggression
  • Frequent conflicts with loved ones and/or colleagues
  • Becoming overly frustrated by relatively minor challenges or setbacks
  • Suddenly not caring about things that used to be important to them
  • Significant changes in their eating habits and sleep patterns
  • Increased use of alcohol, cannabis, or other substances
  • Neglecting their appearance and personal hygiene

Again, the lack of a DSM-5 entry means there’s no established diagnostic criteria for determining what does and doesn’t qualify as a nervous breakdown. But generally speaking, the term refers to a temporary state of feeling emotionally overwhelmed and unable to take care of your personal or professional responsibilities.

How Long Does a Nervous Breakdown Last?

The absence of standardized diagnostic criteria means that there’s also no of universally agreed-upon answer to the question of how long does a nervous breakdown last.

For some people, the crisis passes after a day or two. For others, it may endure for a week or longer.

Factors that can influence how long a nervous breakdown lasts include:

  • The type and severity of the symptoms you experience
  • If you use alcohol or other substances in an attempt to ease your physical and psychological pain
  • The effectiveness of your personal support network
  • Your ability to access appropriate treatment
  • Your willingness to get help

What Causes Nervous Breakdowns?

Nervous breakdowns don’t all share a sole cause. Instead, there are a range of internal and external influences that can put you in danger of experiencing this type of mental health crisis.

Factors that can increase your risk of a nervous breakdown include:

  • Having anxiety, depression, PTSD, or another untreated mental health condition
  • Ignoring “minor” mental health symptoms, which allows them to intensify
  • Significant losses, such as the death of a loved one or the end of a relationship
  • Major life changes, such as getting married, buying a house, or having your first child
  • Taking on (or being forced to handle) too many responsibilities at home, in school, and/or at work
  • Being unwilling to delegate tasks or share responsibilities
  • Not developing effective stress-management skills
  • Using self-defeating coping strategies such as binge eating or substance use
  • Lack of support from friends, family members, and colleagues
  • Poor diet and lack of exercise
  • Sleep deprivation

How Are Nervous Breakdowns Treated?

When a person’s mental health symptoms become so severe that they interfere with their ability to function, a residential program may be the ideal treatment environment.

Benefits of residential mental health treatment include:

  • Being able to temporarily avoid the stresses and pressures of everyday life, so you can focus your full attention on your health
  • Round-the-clock care and supervision from a team of experts
  • Personalized treatment plans to address the full scope of your mental and behavioral health needs
  • Structured daily schedules that include multiple therapies and support services
  • Dual diagnosis programming if necessary to address co-occurring substance use disorders (addictions)
  • Family programming to help your loved ones learn to better support you and each other
  • Detailed discharge planning to ensure you have the support you need to maintain and build on your progress after you transition out of treatment

Services that may be included in a customized residential treatment plan for a nervous breakdown include:

Depending on your progress and continued needs, the post-residential phase of your recovery from a nervous breakdown may include:
